Mountain Passes in Leh Ladakh

‘To wander is to explore and to travel is to discover’.

The ‘Land of high passes’, Ladakh is one of the most beautiful tourist destinations in India and is located in the state of Jammu and Kashmir, further extending to Kunlun Mountain Range. Its beauty and serenity attracts a lot of tourists to the place. Every traveler has their own experiences and a mesmerizing story to tell while in Ladakh. The enchanting exquisiteness of the place makes it the ‘Pride of India’. 


Ladakh is a place of many high passes. Passes are the natural entrances to the other mountains and peaks. ‘La’ or passes simply extend from one peak or mountain to the other making ways for trade, travelling and also migrating. These passes are further decked up with temples to avoid any bad lucks since they are at dangerously high altitudes.

Here mentioned are the passes that you can travel to while your tour in Ladakh.

  • ·         Namika La:

Namika La pass is situated at the Zanskar range, which links the Srinagar Leh highway. This pass is also known as ‘pillar of the sky’ and is situated at the height of 12,139 feet. The pass is head-to-head to the Leh-Manali highway. It is home of the nomadic Changpa herdsman who can be seen herding their cattle and goats.



  • ·         Zoji La:

Zoji La pass is located at the National Highway 1, which runs to Sonmarg in Kashmir. This pass is on the height of 11,575 feet. This pass is operative only in summers, as in winter this pass is closed because of heavy snowfall.


  • ·         Chang La:

Chang La is one of the most striking passes in Ladakh. If you are going to the famous Pangong Lake, the road will take you to this scenic high altitude mountain pass Chang La which connects Leh Town and Pangong.

  • ·         Khardung La:

Khardung La pass is situated at the height of 17,582 feet and is the highest motorable pass in the Leh Ladakh This pass is situated in the north of Leh district, which connects to the Shyok and Nubra valley. This pass was built in 1976 and is linked to the Siachin Glacier. This pass is one of the most important pass in the north because it is used to as a passage to transport the goods in and from the Siachin area.


  • ·         Lachulung La:

Lachulung La is located in Ladakh. The pass is around 8 kms from La Nakee that is around 24 kms towards the north of Pang. The hikers and trekkers often face severe symptoms of altitude sickness during traveling here but even then, the beauty of the place attracts numerous hikers and trekkers to the place.



There are a lot of tourist places in Ladakh that make the experience of the travelers in the place even more enticing. Travelling to Ladakh fills the traveler’s sac of memories with lots of unforgettable and worth remembering stories.
